Getting into the Spirit with a Vintage-Style Halloween Shadow Box

I love vintage Halloween decorations.  I have collected a few treasures, though some didn't arrive in perfect condition.

That is exactly how this little jack-o'-lantern came to find a new home inside a shadow box.   Originally, his paint was deeply chipped across his face.  With a little sanding and some fresh paint, he was restored. I then cut a hole in his back to insert a string of fairy lights, and now he has a twinkle in his eye once again!

To build the shadow box itself, I repurposed an old cigar box that was missing its lid. I cut a divider from an old vintage book board and glued it into place, creating two distinct scenes. The entire background was then decorated using pieces from my Halloween scrapbook paper stash.

The character details were an absolute delight to hand-craft:
  • The Translucent Ghost: Made from cheesecloth soaked in glue, draped and dried over a hand-shaped aluminum foil base. His vintage hat is crafted from cardstock, and his expressive eyes are cut from felt.
  • The Hissing Cat Flowers: Sourced from vintage internet graphics, resized in Photoshop, printed on glossy photo paper, and carefully fussy cut. Inspired by a classic Bethany Lowe design, I assembled these custom flowers using toothpick stems, punched paper leaves, and bright orange mulberry hydrangea petals.
  • The Centerpiece Witch: The head is a repurposed vintage cupcake pick, set upon a custom body hand-cut from cardstock.
  • The Spooky Embellishments: A black cat silhouette sits atop the pumpkin, cut from chipboard using a vintage Tim Holtz Bigz die. The wispy smoke billowing from the cauldron is delicate angel hair fiber.

For the final framing, I used a Spellbinders die to cut two decorative headers, overlapping them in the center so they would sweep seamlessly all the way across the top. At the bottom, I repurposed a vintage crepe paper fringe garland—originally used to trim the shelf edges in my home at Halloween—to serve as whimsical, grass.

It was spooktacular fun to bring this shadow box to life, channeling the charm of Halloweens past!
